Ash Moore: A wedding business we never knew existed Ash Moore

About Ash Moore: She is the owner, dog attendant and Director of Belly Rubs at Black Dog & Company. She is a Certified Wedding Planner through The Wedding Planners Institute of Canada (WPIC). You can expect to see her at your wedding accompanying your dog when you book with Black Dog & Company. Ash is CPR and Pet First Aid ready.

Ash started Black Dog & Company after handling the logistics of trying to incorporate her ailing dog into her wedding day six years ago. Her wedding went off without a hitch but after she reflected on the experience and realized she didn't want to see a dog-loving couple ever struggle to include their dog in the biggest day of their lives. Since then Black Dog & Company has cared for a variety of dogs in all life stages, worked with amazing couples and extremely talented wedding professionals to make wedding dreams come to life!

In her downtime, Ash enjoys a variety of activities including; hanging out with her dog Morgan, experimenting with craft beverages, cooking new recipes, and listening to podcasts.

In this episode, Jamie, Heather and Ash discuss:

  • Bringing your furry best friend in one of the most important days of your life - your wedding day
  • Logistical challenges when bringing in a pup for a wedding day
  • Some challenges with people as a wedding planner and dog attendant
  • The downsides to being a “Director of Belly Rubs” (if any!)

Key Takeaways:

  • Our pets are part of our family and the meaningfulness of the wedding increases if our furry best friends are included and taken care of during the wedding day
  • Being a dog attendant in weddings is mostly balancing energy levels. Wedding days are high energy, super fun and stressful. The dogs are often feeding off the energy that the humans are giving off.
  • Make sure that somebody trustworthy and reliable is always attending your dog when at weddings.
  • As a wedding planner, remember that if a couple includes a dog in their wedding, that’s probably because their dog is very special to them and thus they deserve a special kind of service.

"This isn’t like a ‘tuck and roll, fido gets out of the car, ‘bye, have a great wedding day’’ situation. I would never treat someone’s dog like that and if someone treated my dog like that, we’re gonna have some words."  — Ash Moore

Question and Answer Session

In this episode, Jamie and Heather discuss:

  • How to get started on your own wedding planner business.
  • Wedding Expos: creating connections and getting useful leads.
  • What to talk about with your potential client and what the ideal client is.
  • Marketing your own business vs. getting paid marketing on wedding planner sites.

Key Takeaways:

  • Have a clear idea of what your offerings and packages are but more importantly, know why you’re doing what you’re doing and who you are - then communicate to your clients what you do and don’t do.
  • The thing that will attract customers more is your personality and your connection with them, not how much you charge compared to everybody else. (Although that is somewhat a factor!)
  • Transition from personal business to corporation should be done a little further in the future of your business’s timeline. Don’t rush into becoming an LLC, you’ll get there when you’re ready.
  • The ideal client has something more to do with how compatible their personality is with you and what they expect of you.
  • The best kind of marketing you can do is something you’re in control of.

"Let them see your heart and your personality because they will book you because of who you are more so than they will book you because of how much you charge. " —  Jamie Wolfer

Learning From An Angry Client

In this episode, Jamie, and Heather discuss:

  • What led up to the issue of the angry client. Then, ten bullet points in an angry email.
  • Client’s unrealistic expectations of what's in the responsibility list of the wedding planner and how the wedding is supposed to be.
  • Communicating to your client what’s within your control and area of responsibility and how that might relieve them of any unrealistic expectations.
  • DJ Issues and how clients may sometimes place the blame on the wrong people.

Key Takeaways:

  • For some clients, you have to make it clear what’s within and beyond your area of responsibility.
  • Some clients, even if they hire wedding planners, are not willing to let go of the organizing process - which is only going to stress the clients out and get in the way of the planner.
  • You have to communicate perfectly, otherwise, people will just assume that it’s the wedding planner’s fault.
  • The best take-away from this angry email experiencer is that, as wedding planners, we have to make a literal list of things to set our boundaries on - to make  sure there won’t be any misunderstanding or unrealistic expectations.

"It may not be our job… but it’s our responsibility to do our best to make sure it goes successfully even if it falls under someone else’s purview" —  Jamie Wolfer

Eugenia Morgado - Learning From An Angry Client

About Eugenia Morgado: Blogger and Podcaster, creator of Fairly Bold. Once confused by the modern feminist and self-empowerment conversations, I now love exploring the intersection between femininity and power, helping women live a fulfilled and intentional life, where they can have a positive impact regardless of where they are in their journey.

In this episode, Jamie, Heather and Eugenia discuss:

  • Eugenia’s experience as a bride - what people told her she should do and how the wedding should be and how she decided to do it
  • Taking a risk and starting a business in the pandemic
  • Empowerment, identity, and natural feminine power
  • Assumptions and preconceived notions about the dynamics of feminine and masculine energy

Key Takeaways:

  • Do what’s unique, do what’s “you” - don’t let yourself be pressured by what others want.
  • With the world coming into a halt due to the pandemic, there is some value in taking a risk rather than being stagnant along with the rest of the world
  • Pause and understand what the true meaning of feminine power is - it’s not as far away from your nature as you think
  • Confidence can be a trap - you will not feel confident until you do something right, and you will not be able to move forward with something until you feel confident. It’s a cycle that could be broken by simply trusting yourself and your vision.

"Your value as a business owner is not attached to you as a person. You can fail in your business without being a failure." —  Eugenia Morgado
