Dr. Stuart McGill - the Best Sex Positions for Back Pain


Back pain is an issue that bothers many people, for some it's an occasional bout of discomfort while for others it can be debilitating, keeping them from their favorite activities. There can be numerous reasons for back pain, for many cases all that's required for improvement are some mobility and strength training exercises, however for others it may require a medical intervention. Dr. Stuart McGill is a former Professor at the University of Waterloo in Canada where he spent his 30 year career studying the biomechanics of the spine resulting in his writing numerous articles and books about the findings of his research. Over the course of his career, Dr. McGill conducted many groundbreaking studies to identify the most effective methods for strengthening the muscles that control motion of the spine, however one of the ones that received the greatest amount of attention was when he conducted a motion analysis to identify the sexual positions that would put the least amount of strain on the spine. The outcome of that study made it possible for those suffering from back pain to continue being intimate with loved ones. On this episode of All About Fitness, originally recorded in the fall of 2017, Dr. McGill shares insights into potential causes of back pain and discusses the findings of his research including his studies on MMA athletes, strongman competitors as well as the infamous one on the sex positions that cause the least pain for people living with a 'bad back.'
