This podcast seeks to revive the folktales and oral traditions still passed down by word of mouth in northern Syria. From village homes to tribal guesthouses, we gathered the voices of grandmothers, grandfathers, and storytellers from the diverse languages and ethnicities that have shaped the region, to present these stories both in their original languages and in Arabic.

In episodes, we hear tales of humans, animals, and mythical creatures, stories told with multiple endings depending on the setting and the storyteller, straddling the line between myth and history, between nostalgia and memory. We recover narratives that reflect human beings’ relationship with the surrounding environment, wisdom, imagination, and the transformations of their community.

This podcast is not merely about listening to old tales, but an attempt to understand the present through the lens of popular memory, and to explore how these stories might also reflect our future.

Produced by: Ettijahat – Independent Culture in collaboration with Hakawati platform and in partnership with Rê Cultural Platform and Malva for Arts, within the framework of the Douroub Programme to promote Syrian cultural resources and intangible heritage, with the support of the British Council’s Cultural Protection Fund.

Presented by: Ahmad Katlesh and Yerevan Hassan
Featuring: Amal Kaawash as storyteller

This episode explores contemporary real-life heritage stories and their transformation into tales shared in gatherings and passed through generations, richly reflecting recent political, border-related, and social dynamics. We examine this through traditional games and the real-life stories connected to their narrators, looking at how these narratives use imagination to enrich the storytelling process.
