Dr. Jen Esquer aka DocJenFit - The Benefits of Training for Mobility 

Run two laps then sit on the ground to stretch for 5-10 minutes. If you grew up playing sports this sound like a familiar method of 'warming-up' before practice or a game. Motor units are the connection between the muscular and nervous systems. The motor unit sends the signal that tells muscle fibers to contract; static stretching, holding a muscle in a lengthened position, works by reducing neural activity to the motor units which allows the muscle to relax, not exactly the ideal scenario before a challenging, dynamic exercise session. Mobility exercises are a different form of stretching that increase neural drive to muscle fibers helping them to work more effectively. Mobility exercises can help you warm-up more effectively, or could even provide a stand alone workout on those days you may be feeling a little sore or sluggish. 

Dr. Jen Esquer is a physical therapist known as @DocJenFit on Instagram who posts amazing tips on the benefits of mobility and provides numerous workout solutions to help you improve your ability to move so that you can go out and enjoy your favorite activities. Josey Greenwell - Accidental Fitness Star 

"Change is the only constant in life," was an observation first made by Greek philosopher Heraclitus. Many of us may now be working in careers that were not in our initial plans when we first set out in life. Josey Greenwell is currently a Lead Instructor for Barry's Bootcamp, but fitness was not his original career path. Josey began the journey to become a musician but instead of performing in nightclubs and venues he found his calling in fitness where he now motivates and helps others to achieve their best life through exercise. Recently Josey has made a few more changes, including a return to the recording studio, and is now releasing the album City Games. On this episode of All About Fitness, Josey Greenwell shares his story of how he became a top instructor for Barry's, a leading boutique fitness studio and what making music means to him. This is a fun and lively conversation about how to make the best out of the constant change that defines our journey in life.

Quick Fit Tip - Prepping for the Calorie-laden Time of Year 

The air's a little cooler, the days a little shorter and pumpkin-spice everything is everywhere which is a sign that it's Fall and 2020 will soon be coming to a close! Walk into almost any retail store and you'll see Halloween and holiday season displays which means candy and calories galore. 2020 has been bad enough, this Quick Fit Tip will help you to identify some strategies to stay fit and healthy so that you can avoid the traditional holiday weight gain that happens this time of year. 

 

Some tips include: Weekend meal prepping - make chilis, stews or soups so that you have meals ready-to-go when you're hungry.

Prepare healthy snacks so they can be within arms reach when you're hungry.

Make smoothies and protein shakes to help you fill up before shopping or going to a party so that are satiated and don't overeat.

Dr. Stuart McGill - the Best Sex Positions for Back Pain 

Back pain is an issue that bothers many people, for some it's an occasional bout of discomfort while for others it can be debilitating, keeping them from their favorite activities. There can be numerous reasons for back pain, for many cases all that's required for improvement are some mobility and strength training exercises, however for others it may require a medical intervention. Dr. Stuart McGill is a former Professor at the University of Waterloo in Canada where he spent his 30 year career studying the biomechanics of the spine resulting in his writing numerous articles and books about the findings of his research. Over the course of his career, Dr. McGill conducted many groundbreaking studies to identify the most effective methods for strengthening the muscles that control motion of the spine, however one of the ones that received the greatest amount of attention was when he conducted a motion analysis to identify the sexual positions that would put the least amount of strain on the spine. The outcome of that study made it possible for those suffering from back pain to continue being intimate with loved ones.

On this episode of All About Fitness, originally recorded in the fall of 2017, Dr. McGill shares insights into potential causes of back pain and discusses the findings of his research including his studies on MMA athletes, strongman competitors as well as the infamous one on the sex positions that cause the least pain for people living with a 'bad back.' Quick Fit Tip: Exercise and Your Immune System 

Having just written an article on exercise and the immune system, this Quick Fit Tip reviews some important facts regarding how your workouts could weaken your body's ability to respond to a virus.  As we turn the corner to the final phase of 2020 (finally), which includes a return to cold and flu season, I provide you with a few tips on how you can use exercise to strengthen your immunity along with specific steps that you can take to limit your exposure to any airborne diseases.
